This naturally beautiful British slate has outstanding technical characteristics and was formed during the Ordovician period some 450 million years ago in the North West peninsular of Wales.
Welsh Slate not only adorns the roofs, floors and walls of iconic and heritage projects throughout the UK and the world, but is also perfect for creating stone walling around the home – an ideal material to create garden walls, garden and drive borders, as well as small face walling projects.
The Cwt-y-Bugail riven slate is a dark blue slate, which is quarried at the Cwt-y-Bugail quarry, close to Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales. This quarry has been operated since the mid 19th Century and is the highest operating industrial site in the UK. During World War II, many of Britain's most valuable paintings and national treasures were stored deep inside the slate caverns for safe keeping!
The rustic and natural facing has a sawn back and natural end. It is sold with 100mm on bed, with a tolerance of +/- 20mm. The walling stone is delivered on a pallet and each pallet contains approximately 700kg of slate walling which will produce approximately 3 square metres.
We recommend a semi-dry mortar mix: 2 ½ parts coarse sand, 1 ½ parts building sand, 1 part cement and ½ part lime feb mix.
